The Buti's "Sphagnum bog"

Situated in the wonderful environment of Mount Pisano, the Buti’s sphagnum bog represents one of the most interesting wetlands of Tuscany and of the central part of Italy. Here small groups of relic plants surviving from the last quaternary glaciations still live in a tiny area of little more than an hectare; these groups include some species of Sphagnum (Sphagnum auriculatum Schimp., S. palustre L., S. subnitens Russow & Warnstorf) and Drosera rotundifolia L., a small carnivorous plant that reaches his lower limit of distribution in Italy precisely in this peat bog. Furthermore, the exceptionality of the biotope allows to observe the coexistence of the microtherm species already mentioned and some tropical species from the Tertiary, for example the beautiful royal fern (Osmunda regalis L.), which thrived during the Tertiary era, but whose presence has been drastically reduced in size during the glaciations.

AIPC, in close relationship with the landlord and the competent authorities, promotes the safeguard project of this important natural biotope with structural operations of management and disclosure, to ensure the survival and the growth of this small groups of plants that are today endangered by the diffusion of some invasive new species and the Mediterranean vegetation.

The safeguard project

In cooperation with “Piedi in Cammino” Association, “Amici del Serra” Association, Ecoistituto delle Cerbaie, Legambiente, with the supervision of technicians and personnel of the Pisa Province, AIPC is working in order to:

● Organize annual activities for the functional restoring of the habitat, to limit the competition of some infesting plants (Ulex europaeus L., Erica arborea L., Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn, Campylopus introflexus (Hedw.) Brid.);

● Recover a better condition of the water sources to promote the best development of microtherm relic plants (Sphagnum sp. pl. and Drosera rotundifolia L.);

● Extend the area of the wetland with the activities already mentioned, including also areas external to the site;

● Create a group for studying and planning, involving also the other partners of the project, to identify an educational trail open to visitors with the help and the surveillance of GAE guides belonging to the above mentioned associations, also creating some didactic placards and, if necessary, some gangways or other tools to make the trail more accessible and less invasive.

Intervention of  April 2015

On the 11th and 12th of April 2015, the first intervention of selective cut of infesting plants described in the first point of the safeguard project took place, in order to help a proper growth of the microtherm vegetal species. The chance of meeting for the different associations that joined the project (AIPC, “Piedi in Cammino” Association, “Amici del Serra” Association, Ecoistituto delle Cerbaie, Legambiente) allowed also the dialogue about important conservation themes, also regarding other future safeguard projects of some adjacent areas.

Interventions of 2016

The interventions continue with the purpose of restoring a better condition of the water sources of the wetland and containing the diffusion of Ulex europaeus, Rubus sp., Pteridium aquilinum.

With the purpose of achieving and maintaining that, AIPC carries on the awareness and fund-raising campaign.

Everyone can contribute in different ways: clicking on each proposal, you can read all the explanations.

Some of this options might also be small gift for friends or relatives: it’s a way to help an important project or simply to contribute to the disclosure of the delicacy and fragility of this ecosystem.
